Dr. Joel Evans
Thank you for your interest in learning about who I am. What follows is my story, how I developed into one of the few obstetricians in the United States to be board certified in both holistic medicine and modern obstetrics and gynecology.
Practicing medicine energizes me and deeply touches my heart. There is no doubt that it is my soul's work. Reading, learning, lecturing and writing about holistic medicine revitalizes me. Being of service to society by caring for patients and teaching medical professionals touches me deeply, because it reflects my authentic self. I find it immensely gratifying to be part of the popular movement that is changing the way medicine is practiced.
I first knew that I wanted to be a physician while I was still in high school. This calling motivated me to train in first aid and become an Emergency Medical Technician and ambulance volunteer. It then became clear to me that in order to truly fulfill my soul I would have to become a physician that would be of service to humanity.
After high school, I spent six years of combined undergraduate and medical studies at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education of the City College of New York and the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Early on, I learned about the deep connection between the social conditions under which a person lived and their health. This understanding, that disease was not just about damaged organ systems but could be a reflection of the conditions of life, is what ultimately led me to holistic medicine years later.
In my final years at Mt. Sinai, I experienced the different medical specialties. I still remember my knees shaking as I witnessed my first delivery and I knew right then that I was going to become an OB/GYN. I found the sacred magic and mystery surrounding birth to be awe inspiring.
I then went on to train at the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where I learned from well known leaders in the field of OB/GYN. I completed my residency in 1988, eager to start my private practice career in Stamford, Connecticut.
I worked as a conventional OB/GYN for seven years until I realized that my patients would be best served in a setting where I could offer Holistic treatment modalities combined with cutting edge medical care. That realization led to the creation of The Center for Women's Health, the first fully integrated women's health center in Connecticut.
